Text Box: The strength of any Emmaus community is a direct result of that community’s recruiting practices. Day Four Book chapter 8Let’s think about Sponsorship.  The proper perspective is stated in chapter 8 of your Day Four Book or in one of the Emmaus Series of booklets titled “Sponsorship” available from Upper Room Publications.

Sponsorship is more than signing up a person for a walk.  Its importance cannot be overemphasized.  The quality of sponsorship influences the pilgrim, the church, the pilgrim’s family and the well being of the 4th Day community.

ACT’S OF GOOD SPONSORHIP INCLUDE:

  1. First. begin with prayer.  Pray before talking with someone about going on a walk.
  2. Second, sponsorship carries through the weekend of a Walk.  We provide personal acts of agape during the three days.  These include continued prayer, agape letters, support of the pilgrim’s family and our presence at Candlelight and Closing.
  3. Third, sponsorship continues after the weekend with follow-up. That’s when we guide the person to a Reunion Group and Fourth Day Community gatherings to share our faith with them.
  4. Finally, good Sponsorship enables the Community to fulfill its true purpose:  the development of Christian leaders and the renewal of the church in ministry. If the community is committed to recruiting strong church leaders for the purpose of strengthening the local church, then the community will be a strong vital force in the renewal movement.

It is our hope that you will include a discussion of sponsorship at each of your future fourth day community gatherings.

The Importance of Fellowship in Community

The two disciples returning to Emmaus at first missed the significance of history’s greatest event because they were too focused on their disappointments and problems. In fact, they didn’t recognize Jesus when he was walking beside them.  To compound the problem, they were walking in the wrong direction—away from the fellowship of believers in Jerusalem.  We are likely to miss Jesus and withdraw from the strength found in other believers when we become preoccupied with our dashed hopes and frustrated plans.  Only when we are looking for Jesus in our midst will we experience the power and help He can bring.

Attending our 4th Day Community Gatherings and our Borderlands Celebrations after the walks is a way we can all stay in touch with what is happening with our Emmaus Community. Eating and worshiping together, joining in music, hearing fourth day talks,

And sharing communion are a blessing to everyone who participates.  Be there to share when our new pilgrims come to join us after their pilgrim walk and recall your own Emmaus journey.  Be present to welcome them, invite them to your reunion group, and encourage them in their fourth days.

Borderlands Needs Your Help

Go to www.emmausborderlands.org and check out the pilgrims registered for the up coming walks, print out the team and pilgrim list and begin praying NOW.

·      Come meet with us on Saturday April 21@ 11:00am in Las Cruces at University United Methodist Church  2000 S. Locust St (enter on the north side by the Office sign)

·      YOUR HELP IS NEEDED both leadership and support persons to continue the Chrysalis ministry for our young people.

·      Please help us bless our young men and women with the Chrysalis. A ministry where they can learn to develop a strong relationship with Jesus.
